National Service Scheme (NSS)

Students Support

In India, the concept of engaging students in national service traces its roots back to Mahatma Gandhi, the nation’s father. Gandhi consistently emphasised to his student audience the core idea that they should prioritise their social responsibility. He urged students not to view their study period as an opportunity for intellectual luxury but as a preparation for dedicated service to those supporting the nation’s essential goods and services.

The National Service Scheme’s overarching goal is to extend the dimensions of the higher education system, directing student youth towards community service during their time in educational institutions. The motto of the National Service Scheme is “NOT ME BUT YOU” embodying democratic living, selfless service, appreciation of diverse perspectives, and consideration for fellow human beings.

Cochin Arts & Science College – Manakkakadavu has  two NSS units (142 & 262) with the primary objective of providing a platform for volunteers to engage in social work during their free time. Unit 142 was established in the year 2016, and Unit 262 was established in the year 2022. Now each unit consists of a total of 200 volunteers and two programme officers. CASC NSS units offer a wide variety of distributions of "Pothichor,"  the distribution of stationery items at Govt. L.P. School in Pukkatupady. The basic aim is to provide social services, including the distribution of books in the Kakkanad sub-jail, free medical check-ups, and an opportunity for students to engage in community service and social activities, fostering a sense of social responsibility, empathy, and commitment to the welfare of society.

The NSS encourages the development of the overall personality of students through voluntary participation in various community development programmes, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the nation’s development while promoting values of national integration and selfless service. The National Service Scheme (NSS) aims to inculcate the spirit of voluntary community service and social responsibility among young people. Its objectives include fostering a sense of civic engagement, promoting national integration, and instilling a commitment to the overall well-being of society. NSS encourages students to actively participate in community development projects, address social issues, and develop leadership skills, fostering a holistic approach to education beyond the classroom.
